Argentina Advances to Quarterfinals after 2-1 Victory over Australia
Messi Scores his Fastest Career Goal in Triumph
Landmark 1,000th Game for Messi
Argentina has secured its place in the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Australia in the Round of 16. Lionel Messi played a pivotal role in the win, scoring his fastest career goal just five minutes into the match.
It was a landmark 1,000th game for Messi, and the goal marked a significant milestone in his illustrious career. Argentina faced a stubborn Australian side, but goals from Messi and Julian Alvarez ultimately helped secure the victory.
Messi's goal came from a close-range header, capitalizing on a cross from Nahuel Molina. Argentina dominated possession throughout much of the match, but Australia posed a threat on the counterattack.
In the second half, Alvarez doubled Argentina's lead with a composed finish in the 57th minute. Australia pulled one goal back through Craig Goodwin in the 77th minute, setting up a tense finish.
Argentina held on for the win, however, and will now face the Netherlands in the quarterfinals on Friday, December 9.
