American Teacher Marc Fogel Released in Landmark Prisoner Exchange

Landmark Prisoner Exchange Brings Home Journalist and Teacher from Russia

August 2, 2024 at 4:49 AM

Moscow, Russia - In a landmark prisoner exchange on Thursday, American journalist Evan Webber and teacher Marc Fogel were brought home from Russia. The exchange, brokered by the Biden administration, saw the release of Webber, who had been detained in Russia since 2012, and Fogel, who was arrested in 2021.

Fogel, a native of Butler County, Pennsylvania, was arrested after entering Russia in August 2021 with medical marijuana that he had been prescribed for medical reasons. He was subsequently sentenced to 14 years in prison, a punishment that sparked international outcry.

The release of Fogel and Webber marks a significant step forward in US-Russia relations. It is the first time since the Cold War that the two countries have exchanged prisoners, and it could pave the way for further cooperation in the future.
