Intercession of the Theotokos and Pokrov Day

The Intercession of the Theotokos, also known as Pokrov Day, is a significant holiday in the Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendar. Celebrated on October 14th, it commemorates the protection and intercession of the Virgin Mary over the faithful. The holiday originated in the 10th century in Constantinople, where, according to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Andrew the Fool, promising to protect the city from enemy invaders.

Pokrov Day is widely celebrated in Ukraine, where it is known as Pokrova. It is a public holiday and is often associated with the beginning of winter. Traditional celebrations include attending church services, feasting with family and friends, and participating in folk festivals.

Saturday of Souls

The Saturday of Souls, also known as the Day of Commemoration of the Departed, is observed on the Saturday before Pentecost in the Eastern Orthodox Church. It is a day dedicated to remembering and praying for the dead. Orthodox Christians visit cemeteries to tend to the graves of loved ones and participate in special memorial services in churches.

The tradition of commemorating the departed on this day dates back to early Christian times. It is believed that on this day, the souls of the dead are released from Hades and ascend to heaven. By praying for them, the living can help ease their suffering and aid their journey.
